  2.  If you have this archive, which should be named PCSHX10D.EXE for the sake of
  3.  its associated installation program, with its companion archive, PCSHX10A.EXE,
  4.  there is no need for you to read this file: Start there instead.

  6.  If you have otherwise come across it, however, please continue.

  8.  All you will find here are the files: RII, HIV-1, and HV. These are
  9.  complete texts for the Shakespeare plays Richard the Second,
  10.  Henry the Fourth part one, and Henry the Fifth.

  12.  I sent these plays out into the world of bits and bytes as part of a
  13.  sample of a program I have made called PC-Shakespeare.
  14.  It is more than a computerized concordance, rather it is a tool to think
  15.  about and organize ones thoughts concerning the whats, whys and hows
  16.  of all of Shakespeare's works, as well as draw out specfic contents
  17.  and subjects therein. It should be broadly useful to writers, teachers,
  18.  students, scholars and those in the dramatic arts, as well as anyone who
  19.  wishes to use what is new in our world to investigate what is best in it.

  21.  PC-Shakespeare embodies many characteristics of what has come to be
  22.  called 'hypertext', and some new ideas as well. It has an attractive,
  23.  convenient and internally consistent mouse-driven interface with a
  24.  built-in help system. If you keep it resident on your hard disk, the full 
  25.  version occupies about 6.5 megabytes, but it cooperates with dearchiving
  26.  itself, so it can remain available in much less space. The sample uses 1.5.
  27.  
  28.  It will run on any PC, but a hard disk is obviously required, and the
  29.  faster and more cached the better.

  31.  On a 386 with a cached 18 ms hard drive, very little patience is needed.
  32.  On a 286 with a cached 30 ms hard drive, doing a multiple OR search over
  33.  the complete works takes around 2 minutes. Add another minute for a
  34.  compound AND / OR search.
  35.  
  36.  Finds are made available as complete lines, with or without surrounding
  37.  context. These lines are collected in editable lists of quotations, and
  38.  each line can serve as an immediate point of entry to its place in the
  39.  larger text. Each text, in turn can bring back to quotation lists lines,
  40.  contexts, or entire speeches with extreme ease. All speeches of any
  41.  individual character may also be collected by a single selection into
  42.  a quotation list. Lines and groups of lines in the lists may be moved
  43.  within or between lists or sent to an external file. They may also be
  44.  sorted by a number of criteria including definable sequences of plays.
  45.  Records may be kept and commented (as may the quotations themselves), of
  46.  previous searches both as to the search strings and the texts searched
  47.  (and/or sorted), and these may be reinstantiated or edited. All of these
  48.  facilities, and it is fair to say that there are quite a few more,
  49.  are available in close and convenient proximity to each other.
